The Art of Handcrafted Log Profile

Choosing Full-Scribe vs. Chink-Style Blueprints

Designing a handcrafted log home begins with choosing the style of log construction your home will be built around. Unlike machine-milled log kits, handcrafted log homes are created using full-length natural logs that are individually peeled, fitted, scribed, and notched by hand. Because every tree carries its own taper, movement, and character, the blueprint package must be designed specifically for the construction method being used.

The two primary handcrafted styles are the Full-Scribe method and the Chink-Style method. Each creates a very different appearance, construction process, and structural relationship within the home.

The Full-Scribe Method

Seamless Scandinavian Craftsmanship

01

The Full-Scribe method is one of the most respected forms of handcrafted log construction. Each upper log is individually scribed to match the exact contours of the log beneath it, creating a tight wood-to-wood fit along the full length of the wall.

The result is a clean, seamless appearance with no visible chinking between the log courses. Full-scribe homes require carefully detailed blueprint packages that account for natural settling, structural movement, and long-term log compression throughout the building.

For many homeowners, full-scribe construction represents the highest level of traditional handcrafted log craftsmanship.

The Chink-Style Method

TRADITIONAL CHARACTER WITH ARCHITECTURAL CONTRAST

02

One of the greatest advantages of a vaulted great room is the ability to bring natural light deeper into the home through elevated glass placement.

Clerestory windows, large gable glazing, and upper transom windows can dramatically increase daylight penetration while also emphasizing the scale and openness of the room. Properly positioned upper windows help balance interior brightness and reduce the darker shadow zones often created by deep timber structures and oversized roof systems.

In many handcrafted homes, the combination of structural trusses and high glass walls becomes one of the defining visual focal points of the entire interior.

Designing Blueprints Around Real Log Construction

Handcrafted ing homes cannot be designed using the same assumptions as conventional framing or machine-milled systems. Natural logs move differently, sertle differently, and require specialized detailing throughout the structure.

Whether you prefer the seamless precision of full-scribe construction or the bold character of a chink-style home, the blueprint package should be designed from the beginning around the realities of handcrafted log construction and real-world building practices.
